How To Wash Your Vintage Printed T-shirts

In Short, How to Take Care of Your Printed Clothes

There are two things to take care of in shirts:

the color of the shirt and the print:

Most of us wear colored T-shirts, often black, and the number one enemy of colors is the sun. So, don’t put your shirt under the sun to dry. This is the most important tip we all know, and not following it will make the shirt fade very quickly.

However, some shirts release color during washing, so over time, this type of shirt will become less vibrant even if we keep it out of the sun.

Therefore, always buy shirts of high quality and from trusted sources to avoid this.
Unless you’re a billionaire who throws away shirts after wearing them once, in which case, ignore this advice.

Maintaining the Print on the Shirt:

This also depends on the quality of the print and the behavior of the buyer.
In our work in T-shirt printing in our local project, sometimes we buy ink from a new supplier either to try it out or due to work pressure and the absence of the original supplier, either because of a day off or other reasons, and we discover that its quality is poor. This ink, unfortunately, fades when washing the T-shirt. Often, the ink fades a little, and sometimes it fades completely, to the point that it feels like we didn’t print the shirt at all.
Unfortunately, some suppliers sell fake products, maybe without knowing it because they buy from China and find the prices low, thinking they will make a lot of profit. But in reality, that won’t make them any gains. So, we have gotten used to not selling a printed T-shirt with new ink until we test and wash it, to make sure the product is good and that the buyer who is used to high quality from us won’t find lesser quality.

What else

In summary, part of maintaining the shirt falls on the seller. They need to check the quality of their products, especially the ink used, because today there are many fake products, and no matter what we do, we might end up with some. So the best way is to test before selling.

As for other types of printing, they also come with instructions, and we don’t use them in our work. But from our knowledge and dealing with other sellers, we know that printing that looks like dye or plastic on the T-shirt comes with instructions regarding the temperature to be used for pressing to ensure the print sticks to the shirt. They also don’t sell until they test the print and confirm the correct heat to make sure the print doesn’t fade after the first wash.

The Other Side Falls on the Buyer:

We always recommend not washing the shirt in hot water; cold water is always better. Also, avoid drying, as it involves heat. For T-shirts printed with ink, they stay stable, but to keep them longer, wash them by hand with cold water and let them dry in the shade.
When ironing, put a piece of paper inside to make sure there are no problems. Sometimes the ink can bleed and spread to the back of the T-shirt, which ruins it. This happens at a very low rate and to a small degree, but still, it’s better to put a piece of paper to ensure the ink doesn’t spread, even if it’s barely noticeable.

In Conclusion:

The most important thing to do is choose a seller who offers you a high-quality product. Don’t look for extremely low prices, as excessive discounts mean something is suspicious. It could be poor-quality ink or a poor-quality T-shirt. You can’t discover these issues until you wash it, so a reasonable price is an indicator that the product is good.
And most importantly, always keep the T-shirt out of direct sunlight after washing.

These simple steps will help maintain your shirt.
